The golden rule for fitness has always been avoid working out on an empty stomach.
Why? Because your body is just like a car - without the fuel, it won't run.
Nourishing your body before you exercise will not only give you the energy to push through your session, but it'll help speed up muscle growth...So if you're looking for those gym gains, you ought to keep reading!
Here's our favourite pre-workout snacks/meals:
- 1. OATS. Heading to the gym first thing in the morning? Then you ought to be tucking into a big bowl of oats. Why? Because oats are known to release energy super-slowly and help ward off any blood sugar crashes.
- 2. BANANA. On the go? Fear not. Grab a banana before hitting the gym and you'll be boosting your glycogen stores and increasing your blood sugar levels. This tasty snack is sure to give you the energy boost you're after.
- 3. BAKED SWEET POTATO WITH TURKEY. Fancy an evening run? Before you grab your trainers and Lycra, tuck into some turkey and sweet potato. Not only will the turkey provide a protein punch, but the sweet potato will release energy super-slowly, helping you run that extra mile! What's more? Turkey is much lower in fat than chicken, making it a great alternative (ps - it's cheaper than chicken).
- 4. SCRAMBLED EGG ON WHOLEMEAL TOAST. Heading to a spin class during your lunch break? Then tuck into this quick, easy and tasty lunch. The eggs (with a sprinkle of salt and pepper for that extra flavour) will provide you with a huge protein punch. What's more? The wholemeal toast will help maintain your energy levels, so you'll be pumping iron with absolutely no problems. To keep things fresh, substitute your eggs for some smoked salmon every now and then. This tasty alternative will provide a protein punch and stock you up with omega-3 fatty acids.
What about liquids?
If you're battling fatigue, don't let your workout suffer. Put the kettle on and enjoy a quick black coffee or expresso shot. This caffeine boost will keep your muscles in check and your mind alert, helping you to push through on those dull days.
So there you have it - the low down on pre-workout fuel. Now go tuck into some porridge and head to the gym!
